Sticker validity
“Overdrawing” costs money and brings nothing
Everyone knows the official inspection stickers: On the front license plate of your vehicle there may still be the square sticker for the AU, on the rear license plate the round sticker for the HU.
The year in which the next inspection is due is shown in large numbers in the center of the sticker. The month when the vehicle is to be presented can be recognized by the number on the top edge of the sticker (“at 12 o’clock”). Our illustration therefore shows an HU due in August.
The year of the due date can also be quickly identified – even from a distance – by the background color of the sticker. The color cycle starts all over again every seven years:
Exceeding the inspection deadline will be penalized as follows:
If the vehicle is not presented in time for the inspection of the rectification of defects, this can be punished with a warning fine of 15.00 euros.
If you present your vehicle late for the main inspection, the new sticker period (usually 2 years) begins with the month of presentation for the main inspection.
This also applies to deregistered vehicles and vehicles with seasonal license plates: If the sticker on a deregistered vehicle has expired, a general inspection must be carried out before registration. The sticker period then counts as normal from the inspection date.
If the inspection date for a vehicle with a seasonal license plate is outside the registration period, the vehicle must be inspected in the first month of the following registration period at the latest. Here, too, the sticker period begins this month.
If the HU validity date is exceeded by more than two months, this results in a so-called extended scope of inspection as required by law. A surcharge of 20% is payable on the main inspection costs.
