Is servicing the air conditioning system an unnecessary luxury?

Air conditioning is a must for more and more car owners, even in small or compact vehicles. According to the automotive industry, manufacturers equipped more than 90 percent of all new cars with the comfort component last year. But the gain in comfort can turn into trouble. Modern air conditioning systems with pollen or activated charcoal filters have the advantage that they thoroughly clean the outside air flowing into the interior. However, this only works with a flawless, clean filter system. Otherwise, germs or bacteria can settle there and really pollute the air in the car. Car owners should therefore have the air conditioning system serviced regularly. “Not every inspection specification provides for this and many specialist garages offer special promotions, especially in spring. If the cooling capacity decreases, the cause may be a lack of coolant. With very few models, you can check whether the fill level is correct yourself, so it is better to have the workshop check it straight away. Professionals often use a contrast agent when refilling the system. This makes it easier to locate any leaks later on. As a general rule, the air conditioning should be switched on regularly for at least ten minutes, even at moderate temperatures. This ensures adequate lubrication of the system; impurities on the evaporator are washed away by draining condensation water. If you want to be very careful and prevent damage, switch off the cooling system with the fan running just before you park your car. This prevents residual moisture on the evaporator and reduces the risk of odors.
